Old Rattler

    Old Rattler

This drawing was created with graphite pencils HB 2B 4B on bainbridge board and measures 29.5 x 26.5 cm. This is the volunteer driver of the Mary Valley Rattler; an old steam engine that tourists can ride on and enjoy a piece of yesteryear. When we took this journey, I had so much admiration for the people who keep this tradition alive and felt compelled to draw the driver. I love his hat, his braces and the look on his face. I took many photographs to final settle on about 20 for this image. I used one image for the man himself and many for the background train to see close up parts. I held up the entire train while I was taking the photos and had no idea until the train driver quietly said to me "I think it's about time we left now".

    What is bainbridge board?

Its quite nice, its sort of like a stiff piece of cardboard with a similar texture to water colour paper, I like it for softer affects but not a really smooth result it has a little bit of tooth and texture. I wanted this for the
capacity it has to hold graphite for the train. It's not good for really smooth shiny objects - I was going for a more robust look for the train - a bit chunky. I wanted texture. I was careful to only lay the graphite on lightly
and once to keep moving when I worked on the portrait of the man himself because I didn't want to damage the surface texture at all. Its a pretty tough surface but I wanted the skin to be smooth and gentle compared to the rough texture of the train with all the details on it.
This is lovely it must have taken quite sometime to complete :)
