The most significant change you’ve helped me experience has been to gain confidence in my ability to learn and to remain steadfast in my studies.
When I first began this mentorship, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I have been involved in art classes with various teachers since the 1990’s. I appreciate the wisdom that I’ve gained with each experience, and I’ve been fortunate to garner tips and hints from each teacher. This mentorship has enabled me to stretch beyond what I believed was capable with my drawing techniques as I’ve learned character design, perspective drawing and to develop my own personal style. I’ll always be grateful for this experience!
One of the things I appreciate most about you is your understanding of how important drawing is to me. I’ve worked with many creative types over the years, but I’ve never known anyone else to be as passionate about drawing as I am.
I always wanted to draw but thought it was a skill you had to be born with. In the 1990’s I studied Betty Edwards Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I was thrilled to realize that I could actually learn to draw. But I was unable to draw from my imagination.
I always wanted to create my own characters and to draw interiors in perspective. Your mentoring program allowed me to create characters and draw rooms full of detail and charm!
Once I learned character design I found myself thinking of scenarios my character would find herself getting into. It was at that point I began writing poems and imagining ideas that could encourage children to dream about their future and to believe in themselves.
My greatest fears before I started the journey into book illustration were that I was unsure of my art style, With Cindy’s help, I feel confident about my chosen materials and the unique style I have developed.
Now I’m filled with joy and enthusiastic about my future as a children’s book illustrator! This whole process has been exciting and since I’m project-driven, the accountability has been wonderful.
