Hari Lualhati Creator of ‘Soulworks’

“Through her breathtaking oil paintings, Hari Lualhati creates compelling imagery that reaches deep into our soul, leading us to question some of life’s biggest mysteries. Her work depicts humans uniting with animals, demonstrating our unique relationship. When I look into her paintings, I’m reminded of the fascinating phenomenon of animals and humans living in contentment and union with one another. This leads me to ponder how beautifully the relationship works when we respect and honour their space—the space we both share here on this beautiful earth. I hope you enjoy learning more about the great artist Hari Lualhati through this deeper insight into her life and art.”

Q: Hari, could you tell us when you first realised that you enjoyed creating art as a child and you were supported in your decision, if so by who?

A: I discovered my love for art at a very young age. As a child, I was deeply fascinated by cartoons, and to keep a remembrance of what I had watched, I would often draw and copy the characters I saw on screen. Since we couldn’t always afford to buy illustrations or stickers of my favorite characters, I would create my own versions on paper. Those moments sparked my creativity and even inspired me to dream of becoming an animator for Disney one day.

I was a quiet and shy child who would rather have a new set of crayons or a coloring book than new toys or clothes. My Papa and Mama were incredibly supportive—my Papa especially, who never got tired of buying me art materials, coloring books, and art books. Their encouragement nurtured my passion and gave me the confidence to pursue my artistic dreams.

I still remember one of my earliest affirmations came before entering Grade 1, during an entrance examination where we were asked to draw our fathers. While most children drew stick figures, my drawing already showed volume and detail, which impressed the teachers. From that moment on, I was consistently chosen to represent my school in art competitions—and I was fortunate to receive several awards.

Looking back, I feel deeply grateful to my family for seeing and supporting the light within me. Their love and belief in my art became the foundation of the artist I am today.

Q: What journey have you been on as an artist. For example when did you first begin to create art as an adult? Did you study at all and if so where?

A: My artistic journey began in the Philippines, where I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, graduating Cum Laude. That period was transformative—it helped me refine not only my technical skills but also my understanding of art as a deeper form of communication. Over the years, my journey has taken me across the Philippines, Hong Kong, Shenzhen (China), and South Africa, where I’ve grown through diverse experiences as a painter, product designer, illustrator, and graphic artist. Each place added a new layer of inspiration and wisdom to my creative soul.

Q: What is the primary motivation for why you create art?

A: My primary motivation for creating art comes from a deep, burning passion to express the soul and preserve meaningful life lessons that have inspired and transformed me. I create not for income, but because it is my life’s calling. Art, to me, is a language of the soul—a way to share love, truth, and connection. Through my Soulworks, I aim to inspire healing, understanding, and unity among people, nature, and animals.

Each piece I create holds a part of my journey and the wisdom I have gathered along the way. I take pride in giving my art the time it needs to evolve naturally, never rushing the process. I work on each Soulwork until I feel that it has reached its most honest and complete form—one that truly speaks from the heart. My greatest hope is that these works will touch others and inspire them as deeply as the experiences that inspired me to create them.

Q: What goes through your mind while you draw/paint, is there a calm silence, do you listen to music or do you experience doubt, fear or any emotions at all?

A: When I paint, I often find myself entering a meditative state of calm and deep focus. What I listen to depends on my mood—sometimes it’s soft instrumental or emotional music that helps me connect with the soul of what I’m creating, and other times it’s a single song that I play on repeat to stay immersed in the feeling I want to express. Occasionally, I listen to art talks or even unrelated discussions, simply to have gentle voices in the background while I paint.

There are moments of doubt, especially when I spend an entire day working on a small portion of a painting and can’t yet tell whether it will remain as a first layer or become part of the final piece. During those moments, I remind myself that this slowness is part of my process—a reflection of the love and dedication I pour into my art. I am not racing with anyone; I am giving my full heart to every brushstroke until the painting begins to breathe truth and speak to me.

For me, those moments of uncertainty are not obstacles but teachers. They remind me to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, for it is through them that authenticity, growth, and genuine emotional connection emerge in my Soulworks.

Q: What is your favourite medium to work with and why? Please tell us your favourite brands of these mediums.

A: I love working with oil paints because of their depth, richness, and versatility. They allow me to capture the subtle transitions of emotion and light that my Soulworks often convey. Through oils, I can express both strength and softness, bringing each piece to life with sincerity and depth.

As for my favourite brand, I prefer to keep that close to my heart for now. It will be the brand I will proudly and publicly endorse when the time is right—one that truly resonates with my values, artistic vision, and the authenticity I uphold in my creative journey.

Q: How do you make time to include art in your life, do you have any suggestions to help others manage their creative lives?

A: Art is not something I schedule—it’s woven into the rhythm of my daily life. I treat each day as an opportunity to connect with creativity, whether I’m painting, reflecting, or even tending to my garden. To other artists, I would say: create with intention, not pressure. Make space for stillness and inspiration, and your creativity will flow naturally.

Q: Is Drawing and creating artworks your only profession or main business. If not, what else do you do for work?

A: Art is the heart of my profession. Aside from painting, I also engage in art collaborations, brand ambassadorships, and creative projects that align with my values. I’m currently the Brand Ambassador for Eau Thermale Avène, representing their advocacy for sensitive skin and authentic beauty, which beautifully complements my philosophy of natural harmony and self-acceptance.

Q: Do you have any special unique advice or skills to share with other artists who are learning to create artworks at this very high standard that you are working at?

A: My advice to fellow artists is to create from the soul. Technical mastery is important, but true art goes beyond skill—it comes from honesty, emotion, and purpose. Stay patient with your journey, and never lose sight of why you create. I’m always happy to share insights and advice with emerging artists who seek authenticity in their work.

Q: Hari please tell us about any significant awards you have won or exhibitions that have made an impact on your life.

A: I feel deeply grateful to have my Soulworks featured in various exhibitions, publications, and media platforms, including television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. I have been honored to receive awards such as those from Figurativas in Spain and to have been selected as part of the prestigious Lunar Codex Project, through which my Soulworks have been sent to the moon. These opportunities have greatly helped advance my art career by allowing my work to reach a wider audience and touch more hearts around the world.

Here is the link to the video that features my involvement in the Lunar Codex Project:

However, I see these recognitions as beautiful bonuses rather than the ultimate measure of success. For me, the most meaningful achievement as an artist is to look back at my Soulworks and honestly say that I am proud of them—that I have poured my heart and soul into each piece. No matter how many awards or features I may receive, what matters most is knowing that every Soulwork I create reflects truth, sincerity, and the depth of my artistic journey.

Q: What major and significant goals and influences do you have for your art if any?

A: My greatest goal as an artist is to continue creating art that inspires healing, love, and connection. I wish for my Soulworks to touch hearts and remind people of our shared humanity and the profound beauty of our bond with nature and animals. I am deeply inspired by life itself—the resilience of the human spirit, the tenderness of love, and the quiet wisdom of nature. These influences continually guide me to be the best artist and person I can be.

I also carry with me the encouragement I received during my school days. I remember times in grade school and high school when I would feel tired from painting or drawing, yet simple words of appreciation from others—people telling me how fortunate I was to have this gift—would reignite my gratitude. Those moments reminded me that not everyone is given this kind of talent, and that it is something to be cherished and nurtured. I have carried that sense of thankfulness ever since, striving to use the talent I’ve been blessed with to its fullest potential and to create art that truly speaks from the heart.

Q: Where do you see your art going into the future, do you have any goals at all for your long-term development?

A: In the future, I envision my art reaching and touching more people around the world—through exhibitions, meaningful collaborations, and initiatives that promote compassion, understanding, and unity. I do have artistic dreams and long-term goals, but some of them are very close to my heart, and I prefer to keep them private for now.

What matters most to me is focusing on the present—on the canvas before me—and giving my best to every Soulwork I create. I am continuously evolving, refining my artistic language in both concept and execution, while remaining true to the heart and essence of my Soulworks.

Q: Is there anything else that you would like to tell me about your art journey so far and your inspiration to create art, that I could include in your interview to inspire others?

A: Art, for me, is not just about creating beauty—it’s about revealing truth. My Soulworks are born from life’s joys and struggles, each carrying lessons of growth and love. I hope that through my art, people will feel seen, understood, and inspired to live with more empathy and authenticity. My journey continues to remind me that when we create with love, we contribute light to the world.
