“Late one night, the Cuddleecat kittens were enjoying sweet dreams about their favourite toys, climbing trees, and playing in the beautiful autumn leaves. Except for Toby. He had a hungry tummy and couldn’t sleep.”
Poor little Toby Cuddleecat, he just loves his food. What will he do? This is the lastest image that I’ve just completed for my up-coming children’s picture book ‘Mummy’s Biggest Best Birthday Surprise Ever!’
About the process
It’s a very specific process I’m using to create these vintage-style images. It took alot of experimenting to finally settle on the right mediums and stylisation. I’ve been searching for the exact right amount of color, texture and detail to express the emotions I wanted to achieve.
I love traditional children’s book illustration and am very much inspired by the great illustrators from the Golden Age of Illustration such as Maria L. Kirk. I like to evoke those beautiful happy nostalgic feelings of times gone by.
The entire process of creating illustrations on paper with real pencils and paint is such an important part of this journey. The feeling of the pencil stroking the page is so relaxing and therapeutic.
To share some of the color process with you, I created a short Youtube video and you can see that here;
If you want to see the complete process of coloring this image in realtime (10 videos in total) you’ll find those over in Cindys Drawing Club
Happy drawing times!
