This is part 8 of the series How to Draw Better Immediately – The Definitive Guide.
As we discussed earlier, when using the Artist’s Language, the first thing you will do is compare the angle you are working on, against a vertical or a horizontal line. This might be, for example, a vertical and horizontal line-guide that you have drawn onto the centre of your page; or perhaps you can even use the edges of your page to guide your drawing.
The particular types of Artist Language questions that you will use during this stage of drawing will relate to one single angle at a time. In relation to this angle, you may find that a variety of questions and thoughts come to mind…
Here are some possible examples:
- “What is the nature of this angle, as compared to the sides of my page?”
- “Oh, this angle and line tilts slightly in the direction of the window”
[Suggestion: use objects in your room as indications of direction; this is easier than using left versus right.] - “This is a really sharp angle. In fact, the line is almost completely upright!”
- “Come to think of it, this line is nearly horizontal!”
