We are very excited to announce that the judging has taken place for the end of January Quarterly Art Competition at Drawpj.com and once again the competition was very close.

A huge thankyou to our judges Cindy Wider, Tannis Trydal, Brigitte Back and Debbie Race for once again dedicating their time and expertise to decide upon the winners for us all. At DrawPj.com we hope you all see this competition as healthy and a positive way to encourage you all to do your best work, with a certain standard to aim for.

Our four judges use  a score based formula for judging the winners and this allows for a very fair process of judging.

Course participants who haven’t studied with us for as long as others are given higher scores in a certain category to allow for that disadvantage. This competition is all about awarding course participants for their creativity, emotional connection to the subject, the effort that has gone into creating the artwork, attention to detail and application of the methods and techniques being studied in our course.

Well done to each and every course participant who entered, you have all contributed to making this competition possible and all of the entries were of a very high standard, even more so when you consider that most of you have only just begun to learn to draw with us.

A big congratulations go to our winners;

First Prize Award:

Congratulations to our first prize winner Rosanna Cox for her entry titled ‘The PONDering Frog’. The judges decision was unanimous that this artwork was the overall winner. They were very impressed with this drawing especially since it was created when Rosanna was only very early into our course. Here are some of the comments from the judges in relation to this artwork, “Rosanna has continued to develop her shading skills from strength to strength and in this artwork she shows a sensitive connection to the subject, great technical skills and excellent observation of the smaller details. She has created the texture of the frog’s skin and the volume of the body very well. Rosanna excelled at searching out the details to give the frog character. Well done on a wonderful artwork here Rosanna!”

Overall Highly Commended Award:

Congratulations to Yana on receiving an ‘Overall Highly Commended Award’ for her artwork titled ‘Apples’. The judges were very impressed with this artwork and it was a strong contender. Here is what the judges had to say about this wonderful artwork, ” Her technical ability really shows. I love the textures that she created and overall it is an excellent example of what can be achieved with study, practice, perseverance and tenacity. This is great work, its sensitive and has a great sense of volume. There are many different textures here; in the apple skin, the inside of the apple, the chopping board wood grain and the background. She captured them all so beautifully. Fantastic work Yana!”

Overall Highly Commended Award:

Congratulations to Tammy Stubbs on receiving an  ‘Overall Highly Commended Award’ for her artwork of a fluffy teddy bear which was untitled. The judges were very impressed with this artwork and this is what they had to say “This artwork is creative, expressive and has emtion. This is outstanding technique and Tammy has put in an amazing effort to create this drawing. The head and face are particularly impressive, there is a connection to the subject in this area. With more practice and a deeper understanding of form Tammy will be able to create amazing images using this confidence and self-expression. Great work overall here Tammy, keep going!”

Encouragement Award:

Congratulations to Jen on her Encouragement Award for her artwork titled ‘Posh and Glam’. The judges were particularly impressed with Jen’s patience when applying the smooth shading techique and careful attention to detail. Here is what the judges had to say “Outstanding shading and fantastic attention to detail. Jen did such a lovely job and she has created some nice subtle tones and gradations, capturing the shininess and reflections etc. I felt the image just needed a bit more dark in certain areas to make it pop. She has put so much of herself into this though and it is a huge accomplishment. Well done on an outstanding effort and great artwork here Jen!”

Thats it for another judging round and we all eagerly look forward to seeing more entries in then quarterly art competition. Well done and thankyou to all who entered!
